What is Epithalon?

Epithalon is a small synthetic peptide made of four amino acids: alanine, glutamic acid, aspartic acid, and glycine (Ala-Glu-Asp-Gly). Researcher Vladimir Khavinson developed it at the St. Petersburg Institute of Bioregulation and Gerontology as a lab-made version of epithalamin, a natural substance from the pineal gland. With just four amino acids, it is one of the smallest peptides used in this area of research.

Laboratories use epithalon mostly in two areas: telomere biology, and the pineal gland and melatonin signaling. In cell studies, researchers measure its effect on telomerase — the enzyme that maintains the ends of chromosomes — and use it in replicative senescence assays. In animal models, they measure melatonin and circadian signaling, telomere and senescence markers, and oxidative-stress and DNA-stability markers. The material supplied here is research-grade for in vitro laboratory study only.

Epithalon Mechanism of Action

  • Activates telomerase, the enzyme that maintains the ends of chromosomes, in cultured human cells with low baseline telomerase activity.
  • Associated with telomere elongation in cultured human cells and studied in replicative senescence assays.
  • Can bind DNA near the regulatory regions of certain genes, including the telomerase gene, a proposed mechanism for its effects on gene expression.
  • Studied for effects on melatonin and cortisol signaling in animal models (results vary by species).
  • Studied for effects on reactive oxygen species and DNA-damage markers in cell and animal assays.

Epithalon Research Applications

  • Telomerase research in human cells — measuring telomerase activity and telomere length, including work separating the two main routes of telomere elongation.
  • Replicative senescence assays in cultured cells.
  • Pineal-gland and melatonin signaling research in animal models.
  • Telomere and senescence-marker studies in animal models.
  • Oxidative-stress assays examining free-radical levels, mitochondrial health, and DNA stability after exposure.
  • Comparative work against other short bioregulator peptides to learn how small sequences bind DNA and affect gene activity.

Why Buy Epithalon from Koi Peptides?

  • Every batch of Koi epithalon is produced and freeze-dried domestically in the United States, then released against independent third-party laboratory (Freedom Diagnostics Testing) testing.
  • Each lot is tested by HPLC for purity, mass spectrometry for identity, and screened for endotoxin before it reaches the catalog.
  • The lot ID is printed on every vial and ties back to a public COA library, so researchers can verify documentation before they buy and after the vial arrives.
  • Orders placed before 2 PM CT ship the same business day, and shipping is free on orders over $200.

Frequently Asked Questions About Epithalon

What is Epithalon studied for in research?+
Epithalon is used mainly as a reference peptide in telomere and pineal research. In vitro studies measure its effect on telomerase activity and telomere length in human fibroblasts and cell lines. Animal studies look at melatonin and circadian signaling, telomere and senescence markers, and oxidative-stress markers.
What purity is Koi's Epithalon?+
≥99% by HPLC (latest lot 99.12%), with identity confirmed by mass spectrometry. An independent third-party lab clears each batch, and its COA is published in our public COA library under the same lot number printed on the vial.
How do I prepare an Epithalon solution?+
Because the peptide is water-soluble, plain sterile water dissolves it cleanly — no low-pH solvent needed. Prepare working stock at the concentration your assay calls for, then carry it into buffer or medium just before use. Filter through a 0.22 µm low-protein-binding membrane for sterile cell work, and store prepared solutions at 2–8 °C or aliquot and freeze.
What is the CAS number for Epithalon?+
CAS 307297-39-8, PubChem CID 219042. The molecular formula is C₁₄H₂₂N₄O₉ and the molecular weight is 390.35 g/mol. You may also see it written as Epitalon or Epithalone (sequence Ala-Glu-Asp-Gly).
Is Epithalon the same thing as epithalamin?+
No. Epithalamin is the original crude peptide extract from pineal tissue, made of many components. Epithalon is a single defined tetrapeptide (Ala-Glu-Asp-Gly) drawn from that extract and produced by synthesis. They share an origin, but epithalon is one precise molecule rather than a mixture.
How should Epithalon be stored?+
Keep the powder frozen at −20 °C, sealed and dark, or at −80 °C for the long haul. Once dissolved, hold the solution at 2–8 °C for near-term work or freeze portions at −20 °C or below. Repeated freezing and thawing wear the peptide down, so limit those cycles.
Does Epithalon come with a Certificate of Analysis?+
Yes. Each lot carries its own COA recording HPLC purity, mass-spec identity, and endotoxin results. The full COA library is hosted on our site, indexed by lot ID, so you can pull the document that matches your vial and verify it online at any time.
Is Epithalon for human use?+
No. Epithalon is for laboratory and research use only and is not for human consumption. It is sold exclusively to qualified researchers and licensed laboratories.
